Transfer Your Data at a range of Physical Locations

Baltic Catapult is a range of physical locations throughout the Liverpool City Region that enables you to turn up, plug in and upload/download large data sets at high speeds.

Billed by a flexible hourly rate, anyone can book a time slot at our supported locations in order to move data from the internet (Cloud, websites, peer to peer etc) to their own device(s).

Why Use Baltic Catapult?

Using the Cloud is a great asset, however if you need to access your data within a short time, many would find this almost impossible with very large files.

Being able to turn up at an accessible location, plug-in and upload/download your data on dedicated 1 Gbps, 10Gbps, or 40 Gbps connection, paying just for the time used can make a huge difference in situations such as disaster recovery, office moves, NFT transfers and sending of content to customers/suppliers by key deadlines.

Customers who use Baltic Catapult typically range from Film and TV Companies (rush uploads etc), Games Companies (doing large scale multi device software updates), Content Producers and Broadcasters to I.T Companies, Blockchain application providers and businesses getting access to their cloud storage.

Most customers book a date/time to turn up, plug in their equipment and transfer the data themselves. Some customers deliver the data to us and ask us to do the transfer for them.  Other customers hire us to be around at key transfer times to help assist or be on hand should they need in-person support.

Either way, we’re happy to accommodate most requests.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of technical connections do I need to bring/do you support?

Customers who will bring the data themselves with a device to do the transfer (usually a laptop) can connect with an RJ45 patch cable (from our designed wall port), ideal for speeds up to 1Gbps, or a single mode fibre optic connection for speeds 10Gbps to 40Gbps. We recommend that you check with us that your optical device is compatible with ours before arriving, especially for 40Gbps fibre.

For customers who require us to upload the data, we accept portable hard drives, memory sticks, laptops and PC’s. By arrangement we may be able to accept memory cards from cameras if we have a reader for it.  The recommended method is to arrive with your data on a windows or MAC formatted (fast) hard drive, ideally with a USB-C or USB-A connection.

Please remember that no matter how fast the internet connection is, if you use a slow laptop, or hard drive with poor read/write speeds, your transfer will be impacted as a result.

It’s also highly recommended that customers create a copy of their data BEFORE they visit our facilities. Having the only copy of your data on a portable drive when mobile is not a good idea.

How fast is the service?

Our connections are not normal broadband lines.  We use high speed Internet Service Provider lines (100Gbps fibre connections with 160Gbps router throughput) that are highly tuned & dedicated for this purpose, with nobody else using or sharing the connection. These lines are connected into internet exchanges around the UK, directly into the heart of the internet.

We offer speeds from 1Gbps, 10Gbps to 40Gbps.  In addition to the usual fast speeds, as an Internet Service provider, we directly connect (Peer) with the remote end that your are uploading your files to, resulting in very fast transfers without any slow down or traffic management along the way.

We’ve spent years perfecting our peering arrangements with various other ISP’s, content providers and cloud operators to ensure that we’re offering the best routes through the internet as a result. As we also connect to our peers at multiple geographical locations, we are able to choose the best route on the fly, fine tuning the connection the moment your file transfer starts with us.

Does it take long to get setup once I arrive at the facility?

It’s a very simple process upon arrival:

  • Scan the QR code on the wall to check-into your booking, or click on the booking link sent by email or text message
  • Plug in, test your internet
  • Open your file transfer software then begin your transfer

The transfer process doesn’t normally take long, but in the meantime, enjoy free tea/coffee soft drinks etc with free parking outside of the facility for the duration of your stay.  If you have an electric vehicle, we also offer free 24KW charging.

How long do data transfers take?

The answer to that is very much based on the speed of the connection at the remote end.  That said, here’s some rough examples using our various size connections, based on the assumption that the remote end will allow you to transfer at the below speeds without any slow-down:

Catapult Basic (1Gbps)

10GB File = 1.38 minutes

100GB File = 13.89 minutes

1TB File = 2.31 hours

Catapult Medium (10Gbps)

10GB File = 0.13 minutes

100GB File = 1.3 minutes

1TB File = 13.33 minutes

10TB File = 2.2 hours

Catapult Large (40Gbps)

1TB File = 0.38 minutes

10TB File = 3.8 minutes

100TB File = 38 minutes

500TB File = 3.23 hours

The above is an approx measure and the reality is, most of the worlds ISP’s, server hosts and cloud providers won’t let you pull huge amounts of bandwidth (>1Gbps) continually for any sustained period of time.  In order to protect their own network, peering points, servers and internal bandwidth for their other customers, most have automatic traffic management monitors that will kick in at set limits (set by them) that slows your transfer down to a reasonable amount, after a set point.  We recommend that you contact the remote end provider first to ensure they are capable of providing your required speed.

How/when do I pay?

We ask for all payments upfront in order to secure the booking.  Payments can be make on-line using credit cards, bank transfer, PayPal, but we do not accept cheques.

For regular users of the service, we also offer Direct Debit, which auto-collects your payment on the day that you use the service.

Can you help upload our data for us?

Yes we can.  Some customers prefer to visit our facilities, plug in and transfer the data themselves, others ask us to do the transfer for them. For customers who require us to do the transfer, many drop off the data for upload (for later collection) and or stay around and use our fabulous on-site facilities.

I need a desk for a day to do a load of transfers and tech work, is that possible?

Yes, we’d recommend that you book Baltic Catapult along with our Coworking Desk Space, so you can rock up with your equipment, plug in and do whatever work is required while having access to the very high speeds that you need.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Thanks Baltic, really appreciate you setting this up so that we could upload our Dailies that went to post-production after each shoot while filming in Liverpool.

Elliot BickTwickenham Film Studios

Many of my customers struggle to upload large datasets to the cloud, many of which consist of large file server backups that we must get off-site regularly. Baltic's Data Drop service let's me walk into any facility, connect up our hard drives and upload the encrypted data within minutes instead of the many hours or even days it would otherwise have taken.

Bob LeaderLeaders IT

Baltic's Data Drop service is great for when we need to do Rush uploads (raw camera footage) from our daily takes at one of the drop-in locations. Being able to send them to post-production speeds up the entire process for everyone involved in the production.

Joe WalkerQuantum Films

Upon our brand launch, we had to do a huge upload of NFT's to a remote server in the US, by a set time, otherwise our client would suffer reputational damage. Thanks to Data Drop, we were able to book a timeslot within a few hours, rock up, connect and get our large data sets onto the servers well before the deadline. Thank you Baltic.

Joe HodgsonMonster NFT Consultancy

As a content creator, I have to get my videos to my customer on-time and within deadlines. Data Drop allows me to upload my large library of content to the remote side on a regular basis without having to rent an expensive data connection at my office.

Gary WestlakeSmall Business Owner

We recently had a small fire in our offices that consumed our file server. Although we backup our casework to the cloud, it's huge and it would have taken 4 days on our existing connection that's provided by our landlord (sadly we're not allowed to use Baltic). Being able to walk down the road, plug in and download our entire cloud backups within 2 hours saved us many lost hours and helped us get back on-line quicker.
